How To Get The Perfect Bun Without Gel on Textured Hair

As a woman whose hair boasts multiple textures, it’s easy to succumb to gel when aiming for the perfect bun. I’ve always wanted an alternative to using gel. It took me years to realize that my pre-shampoo routine is the perfect alternative to using a drying substance that can cause breakage.

How on earth can a pre-shampoo routine lead to a perfect bun when shampoo is used to wash the hair (not styling)? Take a peek at the video above as I walk you through the steps. My pre-shampoo routine lasts a few days. I simply place a deep treatment on my hair and seal it with honey (yes, honey) from the roots to the ends. Honey is a humectant that dries stiff but not hard. As it draws in moisture from the air, my hair doesn’t dry out, so it seals in the deep treatment I originally placed on it. Once I place a scarf on my head overnight to keep my hair in place, I wake up the next day with a perfect bun that requires no gel. After a few days, I shampoo my hair and proceed with wash day.

My go-to deep treatment is the Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate Shea Butter Hair Mask but in the video above, I used the Maui Moisture Nourish & Moisture Coconut Milk Conditioner. The thicker consistency of the hair mask takes preference over the conditioner, yet the conditioner still does the trick. Your favorite deep conditioner may work just fine. The key is to make sure you seal your hair with honey.
