Black people aren’t often the focal point of mainstream magazines so I need to share 8 black fashion magazines that have always shared the beauty of black people. As a little girl, I loved flipping through magazines that featured people that looked like me (and I still do). I find that I naturally gravitate towards anything that resembles what I see in the mirror. The Black-Owned series continues as we discuss magazines!
While supporting black businesses and building the black economy, please also support the organizations fighting inequality by checking out this national resource list that also includes petitions and services for protesters. An easy and free way to contribute is by searching “Black Lives Matter Donate Playlist” on YouTube. Simply let the 24/7 live video play throughout the day and the money made from the ads will be donated to Black Lives Matter, NAACP and/or other organizations fighting inequality.
Take a peek at the video below, if you’d like hear me chat about these magazines.
ESSENCE
When I read Essence, I feel welcomed! It’s such a community of sisterhood that it’s hard not to feel embraced as a black woman. Julee Wilson’s work as the Global Fashion and Beauty Director can easily get anyone’s creative juices flowing. I’ve admired her work as an Editor for so many years. Although she’s moved on from Essence, the publication is still a staple in the black community.
EBONY
Ebony magazine is the first black fashion magazine to be circulated nationally. Since its inception in 1945, the focus of the publication has always been black people.
MUNALUCHI BRIDE MAGAZINE
I absolutely love Munaluchi Bride! Its one of my favorite instagram pages to follow as it always features a very beautiful aesthetic. One of my favorite covers is the Winter 2017 issue. It features Letoya Luckett looking like a work of art!
KOLOR MAGAZINE
Kolor Magazine was created a couple of years ago and its beautiful to see what Nigel Isaiah has accomplished with the publication! He created the magazine to display the various facets of menswear and I appreciate the work that he does.

THE GARNETTE REPORT
Founded by Vince Lane, The Garnette Report is a great destination for keeping up with trending topics in fashion. The online publication features multicultural fashion news.
VIBE MAGAZINE
I couldn’t create this list without including Vibe Magazine! I remember reading Vibe Magazine as a kid. Its a staple in the black community.
KONTROL MAG
Right now, my favorite thing about Kontrol Magazine is that Trina Braxton is on the cover of their Summer Bridal issue looking fabulous!
