With the 2021 Met Gala theme being “In America: The Lexicon of Fashion”, I was expecting the Metropolitan Museum of Art steps to be filled with designs created by American designers. That was definitely not the case. While classic American designers such as Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford were showcased, non-American designers such as Prada, Givenchy, Dior, Gucci, Moschino, Balenciaga were worn by Rihanna, Serena Williams, Tracee Ellis Ross, Yara Shahidi, and many more. The biggest disappointment was the small number of black designers being represented at fashion’s biggest night. I was definitely looking forward to seeing some black history through style and fashion but didn’t see any at all.
