Wedding Guest | Self Made Ankara Dress

When planning what to wear to this wedding, I originally wanted to wear an evening gown so I bought quite a few gowns to choose from. For some reason, its always hard for me to get dressed for an American wedding. I always feel like I’m supposed to tone myself down as some get offended by those that may be considered overdressed (so I was told). I usually get dressed carelessly without any care in the world for what others may think of me, but as a wedding guest, I try to be appropriate to the culture of the bride and groom. With the red silk evening gown being at the top of my list, I was told by others that it would look as if I was attempting to overshadow the bride, which I believe is impossible.

This is the third American wedding that I’ve attended. At a Nigerian wedding, everyone is dressed and usually get dresses made in ankara, lace and other fabrics.  I wasn’t going to go buy another dress for the wedding because I couldn’t see myself buying something less than my standards. At this point, I didn’t care to wear the gowns anymore. I wanted something different. I decided to make a dress.

Because I’m a sucker for wrap dresses, I created an off the shoulder wrap dress.

Because I wanted to be able to have my legs out while wearing a long dress, I placed a slit/opening towards the left side of the dress.

Nothing like a dress that blows in the wind. Pieces that flow are always my favorite.

I’ve had the Ted Baker sandals for quite some time and this was the perfect time to finally wear it as it perfectly matched the dress.

I haven’t been wearing eyeshadow lately but for this festive occasion, I decided to get back to wearing eyeshadow (for now).

Because the Smashbox palette that I used to achieve this look is sold out, I linked a Stila eyeshadow palette that will help you to achieve this look.

It’s my first time making a dress. Maybe I’ll make more in the future.

  5. Never tone down your dress for anyone but the bride at an american wedding. I adore traditional African dress. Be yourself always.

    1. YES! very important to stay true to oneself 🙂

  6. Such a beautiful dress. For me it depends on if it’s inside or outdoors. For some reason, people in Texas love to get married outside so I normally have to dress in a way that I won’t feel gross and sweaty after the outside part of the wedding.

  7. Girl, slay! I WISH I was talented enough to make a dress. That teal is stunning and your hair?! Forget the others. When you have a light about you, your presence will -always- be felt and noticed. Point. Blank. Period.

  8. Omg you look stunning! That dress was meant for you. And I think it’s so sweet that you adhere to the costumes of the bride and groom.
